  • April 04, 2013

Families will have the chance to get out and explore the Solitary Islands Marine Park (SIMP) and the creatures that call it home, at one of the free events being offered during the April school holidays.

SIMP Education Officer, Chantelle Burns, said the April school holidays was the perfect time for families to take park in the activities on offer and learn more about the SIMP.

“From estuaries to rocky shores there will be SIMP secrets revealed and loads of fun to be had,” Ms Burns said.

“During all of the activities participants will explore the values of the SIMP and get close to some of the marine life that call the SIMP home.

“Whether you come along to the rock pool ramble, the Diggers Camp Family Fun Day or the Exploring Estuaries tour participants will get a closer look at this unique, dynamic marine environment.”

The program for the April school holidays is:

·        Rock Pool Ramble on Wednesday 17 April at Woolgoolga Headland – participants will get the chance to explore rock pools for all kinds of marine critters and may be able to see sea urchins, sea stars and sea cucumbers up close, or if they are lucky some waratah anemones or an octopus.

·        The Diggers Camp Family Fun Day on Friday 19 April – the day will start off with a rock pool ramble followed by a walk over Wilson’s Headland and talk by a National Parks and Wildlife Service Ranger and a free BBQ lunch.

·        The Exploring Estuaries Tour on Monday 22 April at Coffs Creek – participants will follow the boardwalk and are bound to spot mangroves, mudflats and migratory birds.

The SIMP stretches from the base of Muttonbird Island north to Plover Island covering an area of over 71,000 hectares.

The SIMP incorporates five “solitary” islands, various islets, and rock outcrops, numerous reefs and an array of beaches, rocky shores and estuaries.
